Sleep Disturbances May Be Due to Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux Symptom

Many individuals suffer from stomach acid reflux. It is believed that this condition is on the rise among adults, as epidemiologic research has shown that 20 percent of adults are struggling to some extent, with the condition. There may be a number of different symptoms associated with stomach acid reflux. Heartburn, trouble swallowing, and a bitter taste in the mouth, are a few of the most common symptoms reported by patients. A chronic cough, constant hoarseness, and frequent nausea, are less common symptoms of the condition.

Acid Reflux Symptom

An individual may not be experiencing any symptoms of acid reflux, and still be roused by gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD), in the middle of the night, says one of the latest studies about the condition. The study followed a total of 48 adults, of which 9 were healthy and 39 had GERD, Reuters tells us. Of the group being monitored, 90 percent of the GERD patients had their sleep interrupted one or more times per night, while only 78 percent of the healthy people in the study awoke.

Acid Reflux Symptom

It was also reported that of the GERD patients who woke up in the middle of the night, only 16 percent of them woke up due to symptoms of heartburn. Individuals suffering from GERD have a problem with stomach acid returning back into the food pipe. You can expect to have heartburn a minimum of twice a week, when you are gastroesophageal reflux disease sufferer. You can help prevent heartburn, by raising the head of your bed, eating meals slowly, staying away from common heartburn triggers, such as acidic foods, reducing portions, adding living enzymes to your diet, avoiding eating within several hours of your bed time, and wearing clothes that afford you with plenty of room.

Acid Reflux Symptom

Two common remedies for GERD are H2 blocker medicines and antacids. There are a number of natural remedies for heartburn, that the Mayo Clinic suggests are productive herbal remedies, including chamomile, slippery elm, licorice, and marshmallow, and regularly exercising relaxation procedures, along with acupuncture, are also among these natural treatments.

Do You Know Enough About Natural Cures For Acid Reflux?

Acid Reflux Symptom

Acid reflux is otherwise called Gastroesophageal reflux disease (abbreviated as GERD). The main symptom of acid reflux is heartburn. There can be other symptoms like epigastric pain, burping, difficulty in swallowing, painful swallowing, narrowing of the esophagus or food pipe.

Acid Reflux Symptom

GERD is the rising (reflux) of gastric contents from the stomach into the esophagus.

Acid Reflux Symptom

Normally, the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus (lower esophageal sphincter), acts as the antireflux barrier. It opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and then closes in order to prevent the gastric contents in the stomach from rising into the esophagus. When a person has GERD, the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes brieftly, allowing gastric contents from the stomach to reflux into the esophagus.

Acid Reflux Symptom

Almost everyone experiences acid reflux at some time, with symptoms such as heartburn after a heavy meal.

Some of the most common causes of acid reflux are, stress, smoking, some antidepressants and sedatives, drinking too much soda, alcohol, eating just before going to bed, eating large meals with greasy, fried and fatty foods.

In the event of reflux symptoms experience, lifestyle modification, dietary modification, and over-the-counter medications including antacids, are usually the first lines of treatment. If these measures fail to relieve the symptoms, medications such as Histamine-2 (H2) receptor blockers or proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are prescribed.

A great alternative is a natural cure from the kitchen and is easily available everywhere.

Tea is harmful for the patients of acidity.

Some home remedies for natural cure are:

A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, taken while eating is effective.

Ginger roots can be taken after every dinner.

Potato is naturally alkaline as it contains potassium salt which restricts acidity. Hence taking potatoes regularly with meals helps reduce acidity. Take roasted or boiled potatoes only.

Eating a clove after meals is useful.

Carrot juice cures acidosis.

Drinking radish juice mixed with sugar candy powder will be beneficial in case of sour burps.

Eating a banana with sugar and cardamom powder is helpful.

It is good to take a glass of hot water with lemon forty-five minutes before meals. The potassium in lemon neutralizes the acid. Taking a glass of hot lemon water in the evening is also useful. Lemon juice can be mixed with honey; do not add salt to it.

Taking 2 tsp. of amla (gooseberrry) juice mixed with equal quantity of sugar candy powder or dried amla powder mixed with sugar candy powder with water helps cure acid reflux.

A diet on the juices of orange, pineapple, mausambi, carrots, pumpkin, cucumber, bottle gourd, lemon for 2 to 3 days will help. A little quantity of cold milk thrice a day is a home remedy for acidity and so is drinking raw coconut milk.

Onion is very beneficial if a mix of 60gms. of onion pieces in 30 gms. of curd is eaten thrice daily for at least 1 week.

Mix and grind equal quantity of cumin seeds, coriander seeds and sugar candy. Take 2 tsp. of it with cool water twice daily after meals provides relief from acidity.

½ tsp of Ground black pepper, mixed with rock salt to taste with water after will relieve acid reflux.

A tsp. of caraway seeds powder and lemon juice drunk in a glass of water helps in reducing heartburn.

Light food like rice, moong daal and vegetables like bottle gourd, ridged gourd are good. The use of green coriander leaves with meals is beneficial.

Acid Reflux Symptoms - My Stomach is on Fire

Acid Reflux Symptom

Burning, oh the burning in my stomach and even my throat! Acid reflux symptoms are most often described by sufferers as burning, gnawing, painful and oh, yes, chronic...like the kind that refuses to go away, chronic...and persistent...and burning!

Acid Reflux Symptom

Painful, chronic persistent heartburn that lasts three or more months and occurs at least twice each and every week is often diagnosed as Acid Reflux Disease or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). This pesky little nuisance can cause long term damage to the esophagus if left untreated. Erosive esophagitis, wow...that even sounds painful just reading those words... occurs when the gastric acids bubbling backwards through the LES, the lower esophageal sphincter, and into the esophagus eventually eroding away the lining of the esophagus causing not only the erosions but often times inflammation and tissue damage as well. This leaves the patient with a very painful esophagus which can make swallowing undesirable and quite difficult.

Acid Reflux Symptom

In the adult population, acid reflux symptoms are classically seen as heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), pain or an uncomfortable feeling in the upper middle part of the stomach (dyspepsia) and even difficulty swallowing or the feeling of a lump in the throat. Less common symptoms include a chronic cough, wheezing, hoarseness, a sore throat and earaches.

Acid Reflux Symptom

When trying to minimize the symptoms of GERD it is important to remember that everyone is different! Some easy things to try include losing weight if obesity is an issue, avoiding or at least decreasing alcohol consumption, eliminating or decreasing smoking, and avoid foods which may trigger acid reflux symptoms. Food triggers can include chocolate, caffeinated drinks, spicy foods, garlic, onions, tomato-based foods, fatty foods, fried foods, mint flavorings, citrus fruits. Bummer, sounds like that leaves out a lot of my favorite foods!

But it is certainly worth making the lifestyle changes necessary to avoid the pain of acid reflux disease symptoms.

Acid Reflux In Throat - What Causes It And How To Prevent It

Acid Reflux Symptom

Acid reflux in throat is a very irritating and uncomfortable disorder that affects millions of people on a daily basis. Fortunately, there is a way to prevent it from occurring that doesn't require prescription or over-the-counter medication. Most people are not even aware of what are the factors that triggers this to happen, so let's first cover the causes and then how we can prevent it from occurring.

Acid Reflux Symptom

What Causes It?

Acid Reflux Symptom

What happens is food and stomach acid backs up into the esophagus because the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter) muscle malfunctions. The lining in the esophagus is not able to withstand the caustic effects of gastric juices thus causing the burning sensation most sufferers experience. The "reflux" of the stomach acids can be so severe that it can back up all the way into the throat. If this occurs on a consistent basis it can lead to sore throat and voice problems.

Acid Reflux Symptom

Symptoms of acid reflux in throat can include such things as excessive phlegm or mucous build-up in the throat, choking or wheezing, a lump in the throat feeling. Typically, these symptoms occur first thing in the morning but also can occur at anytime. Sometimes, because of these symptoms, people are not aware that this is a result of acid reflux and so therefore this is referred to as silent or atypical reflux.

How To Prevent It?

One way to help prevent it from occurring is to sleep with your head or bed in a raised position. You can purchase a wedge pillow or try using something like books or blocks to raise your mattress. This will help keep the stomach acid from "refluxing" up into the esophagus and throat by using gravity. Another way that has helped many sufferers is to sleep on your left side. Studies have shown that sleeping on your left instead of your right side helps to reduce acid reflux at night.

Eat your final meal at least two to three hours before you go to bed and make sure you don't stuff yourself. This will help give your digestive system time to completely digest the smaller portion of food you consumed. Avoid foods that you know will trigger your symptoms to occur and no midnight snacks. Try not to drink any alcoholic beverages or smoke before going to bed since studies have shown that these things can trigger your symptoms to occur.

Some of these suggestions may work better than others for you, so try each one to see which ones work. The best approach is to try one or more of these suggestions at a time and keep a journal to see which ones help to prevent acid reflux in throat from occurring.

Foods for Acid Reflux: What Foods to Avoid to Control the Symptoms

Acid Reflux Symptom

Acid reflux commonly known as heartburn is generally caused by the kind of diet and sedentary lifestyle that most people adhere to. It is therefore beneficial to know which foods are the good foods for acid reflux and which ones are not.

Acid Reflux Symptom

People who suffer from this disorder usually experience a backflow of acid from the stomach to the upper gastro-intestinal tract or the esophagus causing pain and discomfort. When too much acidic foods are taken into the body, acid levels in the stomach increase causing a disturbance in the normal digestion process. The increased amount of acids disables the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a valve that keeps the stomach contents in the stomach such that there is a flow of stomach acid up the esophagus causing a painful and burning sensation.

Acid Reflux Symptom

The most primary thing to understand about acid reflux is that it is controllable. By carefully selecting the kind of foods that promote gastro-intestinal health will help control recurring episodes.

Natural Foods for Acid Reflux

Foods that are stomach friendly are basically natural foods that do not contain preservatives, artificial/refined sugars or chemicals. These are un-processed, organic foods which are readily available in the fruit and vegetable section in your favorite grocery store. These are considered to be the best foods for acid reflux, as they are good sources of fiber, an important nutrient that helps quicken the digestion of food and help clean up the digestive tract by absorbing more water along the way and pushing the digested food along its normal course.

There are also other foods that may not be considered natural, but can still be eaten by acid reflux sufferers. These are naturally-processed foods that are also good for the body, but should be eaten in moderate amounts.

Some of the foods in the list below contain fruits and vegetables that contain ample amounts of acids for our stomachs to handle.

Berries Baked or Broiled Fish Cheddar and Mozzarella Cheese Onions Grapes Garlic Bread Garlic Granola Muffins Meats not fried or cooked in oil Peaches Yogurt

Foods To Avoid for Acid Reflux

The second thing that every acid reflux sufferer should know is that certain foods, even naturally-processed foods, contain high amounts of acid. You may be surprised to know that milk and coffee are acidic and some fruits as well like lemon, oranges and raw mangoes. These foods are not necessarily harmful to the body, but when these are taken in an untimely and unhealthy manner, these foods may cause its onset.

So it is great to know what foods you should avoid when suffering from this disorder. Here is a list of foods you should avoid.

Coffee - contains caffeine that tends to secrete gastric acid. Alcohol Beverages - stimulate gastric acid in the stomach Fried foods - slows down digestion because they stay longer in the stomach. Spicy foods - chili, pepper, pepper-containing foods Carbonated Beverages - soda Citrus Fruits - lemon, orange and grapes. (varies from person to person) Milk - if consumed after a heavy meal, this can result in excessive secretion of acid in the stomach. Meat - some meats

Additional Advice

Apart from knowing which foods to eat and which foods to avoid for acid reflux, maintaining regular exercise and healthy lifestyle will help you avoid this ailment long term. Eat small meals regularly and do not overeat. Also it is best to drink several glasses of water every day to neutralize the acidity in your stomach and eliminate unwanted toxins faster.

An Overview of Acid Reflux Disease

Acid Reflux Symptom

Many people suffer from heartburn, that uncomfortable burning sensation that occurs just under the heart, from time to time, but if it occurs regularly and gets progressively worse there is a good chance that acid reflux disease is the culprit. The burning and discomfort is caused by stomach acid that is back flowing into the esophagus, the tube that runs from the throat to the stomach. The esophagus does not have the same protective coating of mucus that the stomach and can be damaged by stomach contents that get regurgitated into it. Acid reflux, also know as Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) affects millions of people every day.

Acid Reflux Symptom

Heartburn normally occurs after a large meal has been consumed and everyone seems to suffer from it from time to time. If you are having symptoms consistently over a period of two or more weeks it may be a good idea to make an appointment with your doctor to discuss the possibility that you have acid reflux disease.

Acid Reflux Symptom

Doctors know that acid reflux is caused by a weakening of the esophageal sphincters that are supposed to keep the contents of the stomach from flowing back into the esophagus but they still do not know what causes this weakening and failure of these important checkpoints. Taking the proper steps to control it using diet, exercise, stress reduction, and over the counter medications does make this a manageable condition.

Acid Reflux Symptom

There is a whole list of things that can set off acid reflux or make its symptoms worse. These can include certain types of foods and drinks like onions, certain spices, chocolate, fatty foods, caffeine and alcohol. Other lifestyle choices that can further exacerbate the symptoms of acid reflux also includes smoking, obesity, and in certain cases pregnancy, which puts excess pressure on the stomach forcing its contents back up the esophagus. By making changes in all these areas the symptoms of acid reflux disease can be managed and controlled.

If no steps are taken to prevent GERD it long term affects can cause irreversible damage to the lining of the esophagus. This can include ulcers, scarring, and a narrowing of the esophagus which lead to problems with swallowing. It can also damage the larynx which can cause hoarseness and loss of vocal ability. There is also a concern for a condition called Barrett's esophagus, which is damage caused to the lower portion of the esophagus by gastric acids. This can lead to a pre-malignant condition which is associated with the development of esophageal cancer.

In addition to lifestyle changes and antacids the most predominant treatment for acid reflux disease symptoms are proton pump inhibitors and prokinetic agent medications. These are particularly useful for those who suffer from chronic symptoms, but it always important to talk to your doctor before starting any form of medical or drug therapy.
