Acid reflux is otherwise called Gastroesophageal reflux disease (abbreviated as GERD). The main symptom of acid reflux is heartburn. There can be other symptoms like epigastric pain, burping, difficulty in swallowing, painful swallowing, narrowing of the esophagus or food pipe.

GERD is the rising (reflux) of gastric contents from the stomach into the esophagus.

Normally, the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus (lower esophageal sphincter), acts as the antireflux barrier. It opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and then closes in order to prevent the gastric contents in the stomach from rising into the esophagus. When a person has GERD, the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes brieftly, allowing gastric contents from the stomach to reflux into the esophagus.

Almost everyone experiences acid reflux at some time, with symptoms such as heartburn after a heavy meal.

Some of the most common causes of acid reflux are, stress, smoking, some antidepressants and sedatives, drinking too much soda, alcohol, eating just before going to bed, eating large meals with greasy, fried and fatty foods.

In the event of reflux symptoms experience, lifestyle modification, dietary modification, and over-the-counter medications including antacids, are usually the first lines of treatment. If these measures fail to relieve the symptoms, medications such as Histamine-2 (H2) receptor blockers or proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are prescribed.

A great alternative is a natural cure from the kitchen and is easily available everywhere.

Tea is harmful for the patients of acidity.

Some home remedies for natural cure are:

A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, taken while eating is effective.

Ginger roots can be taken after every dinner.

Potato is naturally alkaline as it contains potassium salt which restricts acidity. Hence taking potatoes regularly with meals helps reduce acidity. Take roasted or boiled potatoes only.

Eating a clove after meals is useful.

Carrot juice cures acidosis.

Drinking radish juice mixed with sugar candy powder will be beneficial in case of sour burps.

Eating a banana with sugar and cardamom powder is helpful.

It is good to take a glass of hot water with lemon forty-five minutes before meals. The potassium in lemon neutralizes the acid. Taking a glass of hot lemon water in the evening is also useful. Lemon juice can be mixed with honey; do not add salt to it.

Taking 2 tsp. of amla (gooseberrry) juice mixed with equal quantity of sugar candy powder or dried amla powder mixed with sugar candy powder with water helps cure acid reflux.

A diet on the juices of orange, pineapple, mausambi, carrots, pumpkin, cucumber, bottle gourd, lemon for 2 to 3 days will help. A little quantity of cold milk thrice a day is a home remedy for acidity and so is drinking raw coconut milk.

Onion is very beneficial if a mix of 60gms. of onion pieces in 30 gms. of curd is eaten thrice daily for at least 1 week.

Mix and grind equal quantity of cumin seeds, coriander seeds and sugar candy. Take 2 tsp. of it with cool water twice daily after meals provides relief from acidity.

½ tsp of Ground black pepper, mixed with rock salt to taste with water after will relieve acid reflux.

A tsp. of caraway seeds powder and lemon juice drunk in a glass of water helps in reducing heartburn.

Light food like rice, moong daal and vegetables like bottle gourd, ridged gourd are good. The use of green coriander leaves with meals is beneficial.
